Garden City and Plantation Need Our Help with Growth Plan Update

As you may know, Garden City is updating the Comprehensive Plan and your help is needed to ensure the future of Plantation Golf Course. The process will make the plan current, incorporate existing and proposed changes in the community and keep the document in line with state law.

The part that most impacts Plantation is the Future Land Use Map, which was adopted with the rest of the current document in 2006. An oversight left Plantation without a formal designation, and a citizens committee advising the city on the plan update has recommended designating the course as “Future Park/open space” – what it actually is.

Bob Taunton, the project manager for Plantation’s new owner, Will Gustafson, is asking the city to designate the course as a “Future Planning Area” – something like the Expo Idaho property, which the city expects to someday redevelop.

The Save Plantation Coalition supports calling the course open space and we are asking you to urge the city to accept the citizens committee recommendation. Nearly all of the comments at the city’s March public open house supported keeping Plantation as open space.

Mr. Gustafson could still pursue his plan for limited development of Plantation with the proposed open space designation. But when his team eventually presents a master plan to develop the property and seeks to rezone it from the current low-density residential status, the Comprehensive Plan designation would set the tone about how officials would consider any proposal, stressing the need to preserve what makes Plantation special.

The Comprehensive Plan Working Group completed its review and recommended the city adopt the plan update, kicking off the public hearing process:

  • First up is the Design Review Committee Meeting on Monday, April 15th at 3 p.m. This is a procedural step and your Save Plantation Coalition committee will be in attendance but all are welcome.
  • The Planning & Zoning Commission will take up the Comprehensive Plan on April 17 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
  • Finally, on May 13th at 6 p.m., the City Council will hold a public hearing to adopt the amendment to the Garden City Comprehensive Plan.

We most need you at the council meeting to show the support of homeowners, open space advocates and others to keep Garden City’s largest green space, the Plantation Golf Course.

Besides attending the hearing(s), you can help by writing letters to the Design Review Committee, the Planning and Zoning Commission, and the City Council.  Of these, getting the word to the City Council is the most important.

Mayor John Evans,
Council President Pam Beaumont,
Member Elfreda Higgins,
Member William Mitchell,
Member Jeff Souza,
Planning & Zoning Commission and Design Review Committee,

We look forward to many of you attending the City Council meeting on May 13th.
